EURIPIDES² is one of the ICT EUREKA Cluster promoting the generation of innovative, industry-driven, pre-competitive R&D projects in the area of Smart Electronic Systems. Electronics is an enabling technology and a propulsive sector directly contributing to at least 10% of the world GDP. EURIPIDES² is the innovation hub for smart sensors, smart power modules, electronic hardware platforms and more generally electronic product integration and embedded systems for automotive, aeronautics and space, security, medical electronics, smart everywhere (cities, home, wearable) and industrial electronics. EURIPIDES² will support projects involving all actors along the value chain with a specific focus on innovative SMEs.
EURIPIDES² covers the whole electronic systems integration value chain, from materials, equipment and technologies, components and modules, up to embedded, enmeshed and implanted systems. These activities involve about 1.7 million employees in Europe, out of the 2.5 million employed in all the European electronics industry.
EURIPIDES² stimulates R&D projects in an open network of large industry, SMEs, universities, research institutes and user organisations. As a EUREKA Cluster, the network is open to participants worldwide.
EURIPIDES² has been awarded the EUREKA label in Ankara on 19 June 2013, during the EUREKA High Level Group which closes the one year Turkish Chairmanship of this initiative.
19 EUREKA member countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Monaco, Poland, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Canada) have given their approval of this new program dedicated to smart electronic systems. EURIPIDES² will run until 2020 for an estimated total cost worth € 800 Million. This outstanding support is 50% more than the initial label achieved in 2007.
More than 60 companies, research institutes as well as federations of enterprises and regional and European clusters from Europe-some of them like French, German, and Swedish have supported this new initiative. In their plea, they also urged Members states to continue and reinforce their commitments to professional electronics directly contributing to at least 10% of the world GDP. Europe has a strong position in this sector lead by industrial leaders in aerospace, automotive, energy, health care, transport, and in all new domains like smart cities, mobility and security.
The electronic industry today employs about 2.5 million people in Europe and EURIPIDES² could contribute to provide 700 000 new jobs by 2020.
The new strategy will highlight heterogeneous electronic products integration, advanced smart sensors and power electronics but also on the promising enmeshed and implanted systems.
